New York in Three Days: A Practical Itinerary for International Visitors
New York can feel overwhelming on a first visit. Three well-planned days are enough to see its icons and still have time to simply walk and watch the city go by.
Day 1: Lower Manhattan and the harbour
Start early with a ferry from Battery Park to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. In the afternoon, visit the 9/11 Memorial, then walk across the Brooklyn Bridge toward the waterfront parks of DUMBO for a view back at the skyline.
Day 2: Museums and Central Park
Spend the morning at The Metropolitan Museum of Art or the American Museum of Natural History, which sit on opposite sides of Central Park. Cross the park on foot in between, passing Bethesda Terrace and the Bow Bridge.
Day 3: Midtown and the West Side
Walk the High Line, an elevated park built on an old rail line, from the Meatpacking District to Hudson Yards. End the day in Midtown, with an observation deck at sunset and the lights of Times Square after dark.
Getting around
- The subway is the fastest way to cross the city, and you can tap a contactless card to pay.
- Many attractions sell timed tickets, so book popular ones in advance.
- Wear comfortable shoes: you will walk more than you expect.
