The Grand Circle: Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce on One Road Trip
The American Southwest holds an extraordinary concentration of national parks. A road trip known as the Grand Circle links several of them in one journey.
Starting point: Las Vegas
Most trips begin in Las Vegas, which has a large airport and is a few hours’ drive from the parks. Pick up supplies here before heading into the desert.
Zion National Park
Zion is a deep canyon carved by the Virgin River. For much of the year the main canyon road is served by a park shuttle rather than private cars. Easy walks follow the river, while more demanding trails climb to high viewpoints.
Bryce Canyon National Park
Bryce is famous for its hoodoos, tall spires of orange and pink rock. Sunrise at the rim is a highlight, and a short trail down among the formations shows them from a completely different angle.
Page, Arizona
Near Page you will find Horseshoe Bend, where the Colorado River makes a dramatic curve, and Antelope Canyon, a narrow slot canyon visited only with authorised local guides.
Grand Canyon National Park
The South Rim is open all year and offers classic viewpoints along the rim road. Stay for sunset, when the canyon walls change colour by the minute.
Good to know
- Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures.
- Carry plenty of water; desert distances are long.
- Lodging inside and near the parks fills early in peak season.
