Washington, D.C. Without the Rush: Museums, Monuments and Neighbourhoods
Washington, D.C. is one of the most rewarding cities in the United States for travellers who love history, and many of its greatest sights cost nothing to enter.
The National Mall
This long, open park stretches from the U.S. Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. Along the way you pass the Washington Monument, war memorials and the Reflecting Pool. The monuments are especially beautiful when lit at night.
The Smithsonian museums
The Smithsonian Institution operates many museums around the Mall, and general admission is free. Popular choices include the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Some may require free timed passes.
The Capitol and beyond
Tours of the U.S. Capitol can be booked in advance. Nearby, the Library of Congress is worth a visit for its magnificent reading room architecture.
Neighbourhoods
- Georgetown: historic streets, shops and a riverside promenade.
- Dupont Circle: embassies, cafés and bookstores.
- The Wharf: a lively waterfront for dinner and evening walks.
When to go
Spring brings the famous cherry blossoms, usually in late March or early April. Autumn is pleasant and less crowded.
