Montreal for First-Timers: A Neighbourhood-by-Neighbourhood Guide

21/10/2026 History & Culture

Montreal is a city of neighbourhoods, each with its own character. The easiest way to understand it is to explore them one by one.

Old Montreal

Cobblestone streets, stone warehouses and the Gothic Revival Notre-Dame Basilica make the old quarter feel centuries away from the modern city around it. The Old Port, along the river, is lively in every season.

Plateau Mont-Royal

Known for colourful houses with outdoor staircases, this area is full of cafés, small shops and murals. It is a neighbourhood for wandering rather than sightseeing.

Mile End

Just north of the Plateau, Mile End is home to Montreal’s famous bagel bakeries, independent boutiques and a creative, relaxed atmosphere.

Mount Royal

The mountain that gave the city its name is a large park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect behind New York’s Central Park. Walk up to the Kondiaronk lookout for a view over downtown.

Eat like a local

  • Browse Jean-Talon Market for seasonal produce and local cheeses.
  • Try poutine, smoked meat and Montreal-style bagels.
  • Book ahead for dinner on weekends, especially in summer.
