Niagara Beyond the Falls: Wine Country, Small Towns and Riverside Trails
Niagara Falls deserves its fame, but the region around it is just as rewarding for travellers who give it a day or two more.
The Falls, up close
See the Horseshoe Falls from the Canadian side, take a boat ride into the mist, and come back after dark when the falls are illuminated. Early mornings are calmer than the afternoon rush.
The Niagara Parkway
This scenic road follows the Niagara River north from the Falls, past gardens, orchards and lookout points. It is lovely by car and even better by bicycle on the riverside trail.
Niagara-on-the-Lake
At the end of the parkway, this 19th-century town is known for its tree-lined main street, historic inns and theatre festival. It is also the gateway to Niagara wine country.
Wine and icewine
The Niagara Peninsula is one of Canada’s main wine regions. Many wineries offer tastings, and the region is especially known for icewine, made from grapes picked frozen on the vine in winter.
Combine it with Toronto
Toronto is about a 90-minute drive away, so Niagara fits easily into a wider Ontario itinerary, or a combined Canada and USA trip.
